Returning to the Origins of Sound: Artisanal Restorations of Violins, Violas, and Cellos

Every violin, viola, or cello carries with it a story of concerts, journeys, emotions, and the hands that played it. When an instrument is damaged or loses part of its voice, restoration becomes an act of profound care and respect for its original soul. In Stefano Conia "Il Giovane"'s workshop, restoration is not just a technique, but a form of listening and reconnecting with the instrument's identity.

Restorations with respect, precision, and passion.

Restorations are carried out using traditional methods, with the utmost attention to the original materials, historic varnishes, and internal structure. Each intervention is preceded by a thorough analysis of the instrument's condition: cracks, lifting, deformations, structural failures, or sound problems are documented and addressed with a conservative approach. The work may include:

  • Invisible gluing and minimal reconstructions
  • Restoration of the original paint or compatible integration
  • Interventions on the sound post, fingerboard, bridge, pegs
  • Manual cleaning and polishing: Everything is done in full keeping with the instrument's style and era. The goal is to bring back the original sound without altering its personality.

The true advantage of custom-made instruments is that there is no standard model: each instrument is designed and built around the individual. This translates into total comfort, immediate response, a sound consistent with expectations, and—most importantly—a profound connection between musician and instrument. It's a relationship built over time, based on trust and attentive listening. And that's why so many musicians from all over the world choose Cremona and Stefano Conia's workshop to give voice to their music.
